Don't give to me - give to a local charity that is already doing great things in our community.
In this by-election, candidates have a spending limit of £180,050 each. This doesn't include spending before the election was officially called or expenditure made solely by political parties. I will be spending less than 1% of this limit, but it's likely that some candidates will be close to, or at, this limit. It's likely that half a million pounds will be spent during this campaign. Imagine if that money were actually put to the good causes that candidates say they believe in. Would we actually be worse off if candidates were limited to a much smaller figure, or if they had to match campaign spending with charitable giving?
I won't be part of this. I simply can't claim to support good causes while accepting donations that could have made a real difference. So if you feel that you would like to donate to my campaign then please, instead consider giving to one of these local causes suggested to me by constituents. That way, even if on polling day I come in last place with no more than a handful of votes, I can say that my campaign has actually achieved some benefit in our community, and frankly I would not be disappointed with that outcome.
