Promises

I'm not going to make any promises I can't keep.

It sounds like a simple thing to say but every day I see other candidates making promises that are beyind the power of a single MP. The day after this by-election there will still be a Labour government with a large majority. Any big changes that aren't already on Labour's agenda will have to wait for the next general election. By making these promises, that won't be kept, candidates are willing to erode public trust in exchange for votes. I think this is irresponsible and will only end up making people trust their representatives less. So what can I promise?

My promises

  • I promise to work for you, the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and no-one else. Not party leaders, not wealthy donors, you.
  • I promise never to spread fear and stir up hatred for my own self interest
  • I promise to work, with anyone, from any political background, if that is in the best interests of the people of this constituency
  • I promise to work with honesty and respect: I won't lie, I won't mislead and I won't play games
  • I promise that if I do make mistakes, then I will own my failures, and apologise. If that mistake has caused harm, then I promise further, to do everything I can to make it right.
